Today’s interview series features the work of the talented Jeanna Hayes. You might remember her amazing photography in the baby shower theme I featured a couple of weeks ago. Her talent is undeniable… and it’s a pleasure to give you an inside peek

What made you start this business – the major turning point?
I’ve studied the subject of art since I was very young, and have always loved design (which plays a LOT into photography, I’ve found!). I remember telling my husband in 2004, “Before we have kids, we’ve GOT to buy a digital camera!” Let’s just say that the first digital camera he bought me created a monster. J My turning point happened when I took a photo of my sister in the backyard. It was just….SO pretty! Now that I look back, I know it was only because I accidentally stumbled upon fantastic lighting! But that lit a fire that prompted me to study all I could about photography and what makes a photo beautiful. I loved applying principles of art and design into my new “canvas,” photography!

What inspires you?
Besides my husband’s smile and my daughter’s scrumptious little face? J It may sound simple, but I love pretty things. All sorts of things inspire me. I’m a sucker for romance, a pretty scene, old lace, heirlooms, nature, old home movies, peony flowers, distressed wood, and basically all things happy and gorgeous. Sometimes even just coming across a cool movie poster, children’s book, or card from Hallmark will inspire me!

What is the best part about your job?
I love the joy on people’s faces when they see their photos (especially when during the shoot they probably thought I was crazy!). I also love the creative process the whole way through – from shoot to finish! It really is an honor to be in charge of preserving someone’s memories.

Whats the process?
Before I begin, I look for places where my subjects will be well lit (I look for backlit and sunflare when possible). While I’m taking the photos, I try to keep the mood light and fun (to make everyone relaxed and get “real” expressions to photograph). Then after I get home and upload the photos, I get to do some shopping. PHOTOSHOPPING! That is one of my favorite parts of the entire process. I love to play with dodge & burn, mix actions and textures, and choose the very best coloring to create the perfect work of art for each photo.

Tell us a little about yourself, to get to know you more (where are you from …etc)
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. In spite of living in “Sin City,” my parents did an amazing job teaching my 3 siblings and myself great values (I hope I can be the kind of parent that I had!) When I was 18 I met my husband and we fell in love through letters. Yep, old fashioned LETTERS. I love that part of our story! We were married several years later, and just celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. We have a 14 month-old daughter (who we call “Miss Personality”), who is an absolute joy to us.
I am a comfy- shirt-and-jeans kind of person – not that I don’t have an appreciation for fashion - I’m a happy girl if I get a great bowl of clam chowder, think Fleetwood Mac is awesome, will dance whenever Abba comes on, NEED a creative outlet, crave my family, and LOVE what I do for a living!
