Last week, being in the holiday spirit … I decided to deck out my computer desktop. I tweeted an image, and many replied “How did you do that?” Sometimes, I think everyone knows how to do stuff like this, so I never think of giving an explanation… but this morning, I decided to give you a tutorial on how to prettify your computer desktop.

You’ll see it’s very easy.

I’m on a Mac and therefore the explanations will be for Macintosh computers, but I know that it’s possible to do it on PC so with a little help of our friend Google… I’m sure you can find a tutorial out there.

Alright… so when decking out your desktop… there are two parts. The wallpaper and the icons…

I’m pretty sure you all know how to change a wallpaper : 1- right click you’re mouse – change desktop background 2- or go in the system preferences (desktop and screensaver) choose your image and voila.. instant makeover.

For the icons its a little trickier… but if you know how to copy and paste.. then this will be a breeze. First, you need to download an icon set. (Below you will find 2 sites for icons) Once you’ve chosen the set, download it and should appear either in your download file or on your desktop. In the file itself you should see X number of icons… all pretty pretty.

Steps to adding pretty icons to you’re folders:

  1. Download an icon set
  2. Click on the folder/file you would like to change the icon, and do an Info (Command + i)
  3. Click on the icon you would like to select and do an Info (Command + i)
  4. Click on the pretty icon in the info palette ( the mini version next to the name of the file) an outline should appear
  5. Copy the icon (Apple + C)
  6. Click on the folder in the info palette ( the mini version next to the name of the file) an outline should appear
  7. Paste the icon (Apple + V)
  8. and repeat

If you don’t like the Icon you just pasted, you can simply replace it… or if you want to delete it, click on the mini icon in the info palette and press delete on your keyboard the icon will go back it its original format. (folder, server, or HardDrive icon)

Hope my explanation was clear… Happy desktop prettifying :)

Here are just a few sites where I find some great wallpapers and icons. Enjoy!!!
