Hi ladies, I know it’s mid-summer but if you’re like me you want to know what next seasons beauty trends are. Well, I’m here to post about the hottest beauty looks for Fall!
The Fall 2010 runway looks for Proenza Schouler, Gucci, and Marc Jacobs were described as “healthy and pulled-together,” “straightforward but powerful,” and “sexy, cool girls you see at a cafe in Paris.” The best part about these great looks for Fall is that they’re simple enough to replicate yourself. I know it could be tricky to recreate a look and a bit confusing when it comes to knowing which brushes to use…I’ll break it down for you here. You’ll have no excuse not to try it!
Follow these 5 easy steps, adapted straight from the makeup artists behind-the-scenes, to achieve these looks in just 5 minutes!
Marc Jacobs

At Marc Jacobs the look was described as “sexy, cool girls—the kind of girls you see in the East Village, or a café in Paris,” said Nars the makeup artist behind the look. “We were thinking about Kate Moss when she’s gone out the night before and still has some of her makeup on the next morning.” So the makeup was applied with the fingers “so it would look a little destroyed.”
- Matte out the skin using a powder foundation such as MAC’s Studio Fix all over.
- Lightly apply a pale lavender shadow on the eyes using your ring finger {this finger naturally has the lightest pressure} from lash line to crease.
- Line the top and bottom lash lines with a black kohl pencil like MAC’s Smolder. And again using your ring finger, smudge the lines a bit.
- Apply loads of mascara to top and bottom lashes, go crazy with this part! The lashes for this look are slept-in so they shouldn’t be perfect.
- And lastly lightly dab on a pale orange-coral lipstick straight from the tube, blot and then powder over to subdue the shade.
{*Optional: Swipe on a tinted brow gel or use a pencil to fill in and groom the brows}
Proenza Schouler

The look at Proenza Schouler was “healthy and pulled-together with a rich, dark lip,” said makeup artist Kendal. The focus was on the lips, she used a deep crimson on brunettes and a dark eggplant on blondes. Follow this guideline to choose a flattering dark shade for yourself.
- The skin is polished and not overly matte. Again, MAC’s Studio Fix will do the job. Use a kabuki brush to get that porcelain finish, concentrate on the center of the face and work your way out using a buffing circular motion.
- Using your fingers apply a cream shadow in a neutral brown shade to the top and bottom lash lines as well as the crease.
- This look skips mascara and liner all together but if you feel naked with out mascara swipe it on lightly to the top outer corners only and along the center of the bottom lashes. This keeps the look simple while waking up the eyes a bit.
- Fill in brows using a matte shadow in a shade lighter than your hair color. {Eyeshadows have more pigment than brow powders and you can typically find a wider range of color choices}
Brush through to evenly distribute color.
- Lightly dab on your chosen shade from the tube to the upper lip only and blend in using your ring finger. Press lips together to transfer to the bottom lip, blend again. Blot.
{*Optional: This look, like the above Marc Jacobs one also skips blush. But a touch of a warm, golden blush swept along the cheek bones would look great while giving the face some structure}
Gucci

About her collabaration with the designer behind Gucci, makeup artist Pat McGrath said, “We wanted eye makeup that’s straightforward but powerful. So instead of doing the usual smoky eyes, we decided to go with a look that the girl could actually do on herself.” The result was perfect skin and all the intensity in the eyes. This look requires the use of just a few more brushes but is still do-able in 5 minutes.
- Even out skin tone with a liquid mineral foundation like MAC’s Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 foundation. Blend onto the skin using your fingertips starting at the center of the face. Set with a light dusting of powder along the T-zone.
- Sweep a soft brown shadow like MAC’s Cork using a fluffy blending brush from the lash line till just past the crease and onto the bottom lash line. For added sparkle dab a bit of a shimmery shadow in along the same color to the center of the lid and outer corners, MAC’s Woodwinked would look great.
- Using a creamy waterproof liner like MAC’s Technakohl in Grachblack line the inner rims of the top and bottom lash lines as well as drawing a super thin line along the top lashes with the same pencil. Blink strongly to transfer color, making sure it reaches the entire inner rims of the eyes.
- Apply two coats of a rich volumizing mascara to top and bottom lashes.
- To add contour to the cheeks sweep a matte golden bronzer onto the hollows of the cheeks.
Lastly, pat a clear lip balm onto the lips to let their natural rosy color show through.
{*Optional: To create the glow of flawless skin add a touch of cream highlighter to the tops of cheekbones, bow of the lip, and chin}
xoxo

Hi! I’m Christina, and I’m guest blogging for Kelly today. Over at my blog, Perfect Laughter, I write about art and graphic design. Since we all have babies on the brain with Kelly on maternity leave, I thought I’d share some art with you that would be great for decorating a kids’ room or nursery. I chose things that were fun, a little different, and most importantly, affordable. Everything in this list is $30 (US) or less.
Kill Taupe: Crammed Organisms

Kill Taupe is from my hometown of Detroit, and I love the bright, funny characters he draws. This little print runs the gamut of outright adorable to faux scary. It has everything from cute cupcakes to one-eyed horned monsters. $15 in Kill Taupe’s shop.
The Little Friends of Printmaking: Year of the Tiger

This Year of the Tiger print from The Little Friends of Printmaking would be a great way to celebrate the 2010 arrival of your bundle of joy. This sleepy scene would be peaceful to gaze at during late night feedings. $25 in the Little Friends Shoppe.
Kristin Barr: Nesting

Kristin is also from Detroit. The girls she draws always remind me of fairy tales. This beautiful forest creature would be a perfect backdrop for a bedtime story. $20 in Kristin’s Etsy shop.
Andy Kehoe: Budding Youth

Andy Kehoe typically uses earthy tones in his work. While the color palette of this print is a little more subdued, I think it’s sophisticated, and could even work in a parents’ room to remind them of their new found purpose. $30 in Andy’s Etsy shop.
Thanks to Kelly for having me as a guest blogger, and thanks to you for reading!

Hello Darling!
My name is Arleene Taylor, I’m a makeup artist from California. I’ve been doing makeup (bridal, film, editorial, photography) for 5 years and running a beauty blog, MyHeartistry, for a year and a half. Visit to learn more tips and tricks, how-to’s, and gather inspiration. I recently moved to Northern California after living in Orange County my whole life. And I have to say that one of the major changes is the heat! Now I know the value of a coastal breeze. I hope to share some tips and tricks with all of you to make your daily makeup routine a bit easier and a lot more exciting!
One major down side about the summer sun is keeping your makeup from melting right off. After all, we all want to look our best in summer’s hottest colors with out risking being a hot, shiny mess.
So, what products and formulas should you opt for?
What should be in your makeup bag?
And what should you avoid?
Here are my summer tips to melt-proof your makeup and keep you looking fresh-faced even on the hottest day.

For Starters:
Wear a primer. This step tends to be skipped but it can make a big difference. Choose a lightweight, oil-free formula and apply after your moisturizer or sunscreen and before the rest of your makeup. A little goes a long way so a pea-size amount should be enough. This step is essential to long-lasting foundation and color.
Cover Up:
Less is more when it comes to makeup in the summer but if you feel you need coverage, be selective. If you absolutely must wear foundation choose a sheer silicone-based formula. Silicone acts as a barrier from humidity. Avoid liquids as much as possible, choose a cream concealer and spot treat dark circles and blemishes using your ring finger to pat and blend the color onto skin. To avoid a shiny complexion make sure and look for oil-free products always, summer or not.
Stains, Tints, and Gels, Oh my!:
Makeup has come along way from one general formula for the entire face, powders are practically a thing of the past. Thanks to stains, tints, gels, balms, and creams designed for the lips, eyes, and cheeks you can achieve the look you want with the same color pay off and even better staying power. Not to mention a lovely sheen finish that will give your skin that coveted glow. These formulas work wonders in the summer and are great alternatives to powder because they won’t mix with sweat, smear, or run. Avoid kohl liners that will smear, powder blush that will fade, and talky powders that will cake when you sweat. But if you tend to be oily and need the security of a powder, choose a talc-free translucent formula and apply lightly with a large fluffy brush to the t-zone. The talc-free, color-free formula stops shine and sets makeup with out appearing dry or changing colors.
Water-proof=Melt-proof:
Don’t underestimate the power of water-proof mascara and eyeliner. It’s great for daily use when you need to go from work to dinner to a night out and there’s no exception when it comes to swimming, sweating, or working out. Choose a water-proof mascara with a creamy, smudge-resistant formula that won’t flake off or make lashes brittle. As for eyeliner go with a smooth, smudge-proof gel formula that glides on easily, sets quickly and lasts all day. These two products, which come in tons of different colors, are enough to play up the eyes so it can cut your makeup time in half by not having to do shadows.
Don’t leave home without these:
*Sunscreen. It’s so important to start the day off with sunscreen for several reasons. Sunscreen (choose a broad spectrum one that protects against both UVB and UVA rays) is the best way to prevent skin from aging, wrinkles and sunspots caused by UVA rays, how could we pass on that?? Along with ranging in SPF (15-70) there are formulas that include antioxidants that work double-time by protecting from free radicals and UV damage, while others come in a wipe form that make it quick and easy to freshen up as it protects. Luckily most are designed with different skin types in mind (from acne-prone, sensitive, to normal, and oily) so there’s no excuse, girls! In the past it was hard to reach for the sunscreen because of its tell-tale smell and the way it felt on the skin but now most formulas on the market are so lightweight and fresh smelling that you won’t even know it’s there.
*Oil-absorbing sheets. These thin little papers absorb surface oil without smudging makeup, rendering the mid-day compact touch up useless and avoiding all that product build-up, yuck.
*Tinted lip balm with SPF. Choose your favorite color in a wax formula to avoid it melting on your lips.
Enjoy your summer looking beautiful while staying safe from the rays.
XOXO

Before I got pregnant I started shopping around in hopes to find a great new eau de parfum. Why before I got pregnant? Well, I honestly didn’t like wearing perfume. Not that it got me nauseous or anything of that sort… but I didn’t want to smell (I dunno I had this fixed idea that hormones and perfume didn’t mix. Weird I know! )
I’ve had a history of switching perfumes once a bottle is finished, but before the pregnancy I was wearing Turquatic from M.A.C. I think it happened to be my 4th bottle (they are teeny tiny) and now I’m ready to switch.

weheartit/tumblr
This is my perfume history:
Cool Water by Davidoff
Aqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani
Angel by Thierry Mugler
Sentiment by Escada
Lolita Lempicka by Lolita Lempicka
Turquatic by M.A.C
As you can see, I’m a sweet scent type of girl… I stay miles away from anything spicy or too floral. That stuff makes me nauseous (non-pregnant). eeeek. So the last time I left off the perfume search, I found 2 perfumes that I actually enjoy the smell from the bottle and even when its on me.
Viva la Juicy by Juicy Couture & Black XS by Paco Rabanne

weheartit/tumblr

ScentStation
Now, both smell really nice (hubby approved) but was leaning more towards the Black XS sent. I was still unsure… i know this may sound weird, but the bottle wasn’t as pretty as Viva la Juicy. Then I remembered my friend got a bottle of Flower Bomb by Viktor & Rolf and it smelled SOOOOOO nice plus the packaging was to die for. But with the 120$ price tag, I knew I had to give up that idea even if the hubs liked that perfume above all the ones I showed him, or wore in the past. Le sigh.

Source
Well fast forward 7 months later…. (which is techinically two-weeks ago) and I am beyond excited. Why? Because I entered a contest to win a bottle of Flowerbomb to celebrate it’s 5th anniversary. and believe it or not. I WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have NO idea how freaken excited I am. Could you believe, winning something on a blog, that you would literally do anything to actually win it. Well that’s how I felt about this giveaway. I can’t wait to receive the package in the mail and in a way, I am happy I didn’t end up buying those two other perfumes. They smelt nice, but not 100% me.
I hope you don’t think I’m crazy, because I didn’t buy a perfume cuz of it’s packaging. Have you chosen a perfume based on the packaging? Does the packaging affect your overall impression on the product. Does it make it feel like its more of a high end, more expensive product?
Whats your take on the subject?

I’ve always been a fan of the MINI Cooper. When I was younger, I told myself, “one day I will have my own” like a little girl talking about her dream wedding or dream husband. The design and style of the MINI was for me the MACs of the PC cars in the industry. I know, I’m a little weird, but it’s one of the only cars I consider it to be that. I don’t know… it seems to be the perfect car for a graphic designer. No?
The only thing that I didn’t like about the current designs were the two doors. But now… that’s not an issue. Why? Because the Countryman is coming to MINI ville.
As stated on their site : “Then there were four: in the wake of the MINI, MINI Cabrio and MINI Clubman, a new MINI variant is now taking shape − in the form of the MINI Crossover Concept”

“What’s it got to offer? Four-wheel drive, four side doors, four single seats and a body length which, for the first time, extends beyond four metres. But it’s not just about numbers: interior functionality and versatility have reached a whole new level, too. Highlights include the MINI Center Globe, a central unit for entertainment, communication, navigation and vehicle functions, and the MINI Center Rail, which greatly enhances storage possibilities and all-round flexibility at the front and rear.”

No official date as to when it will find its way to the Americas… I’m sure I’m not the only one interested in this little beauty. Though I won’t be changing my car for another 4 years, it will definitely be on my list when comes time to purchase a new car. It would be soooo sweet. Aw… now let me go daydream of me in my MINI.

I finally received my MacBook Pro last night and I am beyond excited. At the moment I’m simply installing and transferring stuff from my old computer to my new one, so I haven’t had much time to think about anything else. I did buy myself a magic mouse as well as a bubble pink Incase sleeve, but I have nothing to actually transport my laptop in. I mean, knowing me… I’m bound to drop it (lets hope not) but I won’t say no to extra protection (gee sounds like a condom tagline
)
My friend Kate introduced me to the Gina B. Bella Laptop Bag and I simply drooled all over my keyboard my jaw dropped. I mean, it is the most beautiful bag I have ever seen. Looks like a purse, practical and elegant at the same time. Plus a touch of pink…. who wouldn’t want that?

Included in this multi-functional handbag is a dedicated case for your laptop with organizational features for a cell phone, business cards, and pens. Additional features include a back sleeve and a removable and adjustable leather shoulder strap. The back sleeve allows you to slip the laptop case over luggage handles or the gina b. trolley while the leather shoulder strap provides the ability to carry the sleeve on its own.

Offered in either white or black… this laptop bag is by far the best I have seen (but then again, I haven’t been searching the net endless hours) Retailed at 298$ its a little steep for my budget… but who knows, my birthday IS coming around. Actually in 1 month and 1 day… but who’s really counting
I personally love the look of the white bag, but again clumsy as I am… I’m bound to have pen marks, coffee stains and whatever else that could compromise the prettiness of this bag.
Any suggestions of amazing Laptop bags? Any that you love, but couldn’t afford?

Today’s Interview features the wonderful jewelry of Mija Jewelry. The collection is crafted from the finest quality gold, silver, gemstones, and pearls. The pieces are cast from original hand-carved wax sculptures and the gemstones are individually set by hand. MIJA is proud to bring you a line of timeless, delicate, handcrafted jewelry for babies, children, and women…
Hope you enjoy the behind the scenes….

What made you start this business – the major turning point?
The idea for the company came about when I was in London in 2006 visiting my older sister and her family. I had graduated from UCLA a year earlier with a bachelors in communication studies and had planned to follow in my older sister’s footsteps by working in film production (she runs/co-owns a large commercial production company in London). While I have always been a creative person, I had spent the better part of high school and college ignoring my creative passions and focusing on academics and grades. During the year after I graduated, I began to take on the hobby of jewelry making. So, when I went to London and saw my beautiful nieces, I was inspired to make them something I knew would make them feel like a princess. My sister had a broken pearl necklace. I took two pearls from it and made two little gold chain bracelets, each with a single pearl. My nieces and my sister immediately loved them. The girls slept with them and bathed with them and would not take them off. My sister had told me that she had looked everywhere (London, LA, NY) for jewelry for her little girls and she could not find anything worthwhile. All she could find was either solid gold and super expensive or extremely garish and cheesy. My sister was convinced that there was a huge demand for sweet, simple jewelry for girls that was made of precious metals, pearls & gemstones, but that did not cost a fortune. She convinced me that I should start a line of jewelry for little girls. So, the collection started as strictly a children’s line and has evolved into women’s as well. Now the women’s collection has taken off and I have also started designing a bridal collection (inspired by my own desires to have beautiful jewelry for my wedding…I’m newly engaged). The bridal collection was also inspired by so many women buying our jewelry (especially our earrings) for their weddings.

What inspires you?
I find my inspiration from everywhere! One of the pieces I am most excited about, which will be unveiled in our new spring/summer collection, was inspired by a tattoo on the back of a girl sitting at the bar in Sushi Ko in Glover Park! Somehow, that tattoo stuck in my head and ended up turning into a necklace design!
What is the best part about your job?
One of the best parts is that I am finally able to nurture my creative side. After ignoring it for so long during school, it is so great to be able to finally explore my artistic talents again. I also LOVE seeing people who are thrilled after buying a piece of jewelry that I designed. Seeing that smile on their faces is wonderful.

Whats the process?
I design the jewelry and it is all made overseas. It is actually quite an interesting process: It of course begins with an idea for a design (inspired from all sorts of things which I will get into later). I then draw and sketch the design using pencil and paper. I must specify every millimeter of the design: the exact dimensions of each part and what size gemstones or pearls are to be used, etc. We then go about gathering all the materials for the piece (chain, gemstones, etc). We buy gemstones from the US, India, Thailand, China, etc and then buy our chain and clasps from Italy. All the pieces are then gathered and shipped to China where they are all skillfully put together. Our metalsmiths usually work with gold and diamonds, so needless to say, they are extremely meticulous and careful with their work since they usually are working with such expensive materials. Our jewelry is actually all cast in sterling silver. Some pieces are also plated in 18k gold and then the precious & semi-precious gemstones and pearls are all hand-set.
Do you have an online shop?
Yes!! www.mijajewelry.com

Tell us a little about yourself, to get to know you more (where are you from …etc)
I grew up in the Bay Area in California in a little town called Orinda (right next to Berkeley). I went to college at UCLA and lived in both LA and San Francisco after I graduated. I knew that if I didn’t leave California in my early 20′s, then I would never leave and explore another part of the country. So, I moved to NY when I was starting my business. I don’t think I realized how difficult it is to start a business in NY (the cost of living and the cost of space is so extremely high!) At the time I was also dating someone who was living in DC. So, I would go back and forth between NY and DC and finally ended up settling in DC (with the man who is now my fiance). He too started his own company a few years ago (www.smathersandbranson.com) and I was blessed to be able to learn from him and his business partner about how to run a business. I am currently running the office, traveling for the business, and designing several new collections (which will launch in a few months)!
